No. 21 was “Wild at Heart” (David Lynch, 1990). Oscars: Nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Diane Ladd). I remember watching the scene where “the head pops off” with some friends over and over and over and laughing and laughing.

No. 19 was “Silkwood” (Mike Nichols, 1983). Oscars: Best Actress (Meryl Streep — her fourth), Best Suporting Actress (Cher), Best Director (Mike Nichols), Film Editing and Original Screenplay (Nora Ephron, before she got comedic). The shower scenes are as shocking as the shower scene in “Psycho.”

No. 25

11 correct guess (Alexis, Carrie, Chad, coasterboy, katiecroft, moe, monsieurxander, rumplefin, smoothmusic, tmantones, Zack).

No. 18 was “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (Karel Reisz, 1981). Oscars: Nominated for Best Actress (Meryl Streep — only her third nomination), Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing and Adapted Screenplay. Stultifyingly dull in a freshman English sort of way.

No. 24

20070224

7 correct guesses (Carrie, Chad, katiecroft, monsieurxander, rumplefin, tmantones, Zack).

No. 17 was “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (Michael Apted, 1980). Oscars: Won Best Actress (Sissy Spacek); nominated for Best Pictures, Art Direction, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound and Adapted Screenplay. The guy who wrote the screenplay is from my hometown and thus I used to crap on this movie when I was younger. I was wrong — it’s beautifully written, thoughtfully directed and well-acted. You should see it — a little country music story won’t kill all you hipsters. Superior to “Walk the Line.” (Tommy Lee’s dye job is awful, though).

No. 16 was “All That Jazz” (Bob Fosse, 1979). Oscars: Won Original Score, Costume Design and Art Direction; nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Roy Scheider), Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Original Screenplay. How the hell did I get two Bob Fosse movies in this month? He only made five.

No. 15 was “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (Steven Spielberg, 1977). Oscars: Won Best Cinematography; nominated for Best Director (Steven Spielberg), Best Supporting Actress (Melinda Dillon), Film Editing, Original Score, Sound and Visual Effects. My favorite Speilberg movie. How did the fates conspire to make Melinda Dillon into the mom in “A Christmas Story”?

No. 14 was “Lenny” (Bob Fosse, 1974). Oscars: Nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman), Best Actress (Valerie Perrine), Best Director (Bob Fosse), Cinematography and Adapted Screenplay. A bit of this movie was remade for the director’s autobiographical “All That Jazz.”
